Scaffolding Suppliers – Industry Alert
Deadly Second hand Scaffolding – Kwikstage Standard Failure
As an industry leader in Scaffolding Manufacturing, Scaffold Repair, Reconditioning and Testing, we deal with failed and deadly equipment on a daily basis. We are being presented with more and more failed Kwikstage Standards recently, and this is cause for great concern.
As of yesterday 10.04.14, St Helens Plant Limited contacted all scaffolding suppliers within the UK, which we know are using this stock and under the impression its ‘fit for purpose’ working stock. We have been now released an industry alert and contact relevant governing bodies advising this stock must be checked and customers informed.
Carelessness and Consequences
It is the duty of all Scaffolding Suppliers who have been notified of this issue to contact customers who have been sold or hired ‘Kwikstage Standards’.
It is inevitable this equipment will cause a tragedy.
Spigot Type Failure
There has always been an issue with the old 5 piece Head Fitting, to identify this failure the Nodding Donkey Test was put in place. Failure is also now becoming an issue with the Spigot Type, the area where the Spigot comes out the Standard 4mm tube is severely corroding and only properly visible after Shot Blasting.
The Standard can easily break by simply topping out and snapping off. This failure is far more deadly that the 5 Piece Head Fitting Type Failure, as the tube would bend more often than not, leaving some degree of support and stability, rather than entirely breaking off. Only in the most severe cases did the 5 Piece Head Fitting break off completely.
This is a widespread issue we have come across in great qualities over the last few weeks is gravely worrying, as this equipment is in circulation and being used throughout the UK and perhaps overseas. We are well aware the Scaffolding Suppliers who have this equipment will be unaware of the issue, as mentioned it is only visible after Shot Blasting.
