St Helens Plant manufacture and supply Anti-Skid Road Plates and plain, Steel Road Plates available in a variety of aggregates and sizes.
Steel Road Plates have been used within the construction, roads and transport industries for many years. Over recent years the preferred Road Plate of choice for many contractors and councils has become the skid-resident aggregate coated, Anti-Skid Road Plates.
Road Plates are used to provide a temporary, weight bearing surface over trenches on roads which are under construction or repair. Road Plates provide a strong, robust support over any uneven surfaces or open trenches, which pose a risk to motorists, cyclists, motorbike users and pedestrians.

Cost Savings of Steel & Anti-Skid Road Plates
As detailed in page 14 of a trial conducted by Richard Jordan TRL, (Transport Research Laboratory). The use of Road Plates was trialed by Ringway Jacobs for the products and materials which reduce traffic congestion.
The trail was conducted at the Hamilton Road junction (A5023) and Camden Road (A503), where works to construct a new chamber were planned to be conducted in the middle of the busy carriageway. Works were necessary due to an issue with the existing signals duct.
The roads maintenance division had a small window between 10am and 3pm to conduct the works, before rush hour traffic was expected. Any works still to be conducted outside this time-frame would have encountered a charge of up to £800 per day.
The works were scheduled to be completed over the course of 5 days, with each day only permitting a 5 hour working window. The works included various stages to remove the blockage and resurface the carriageway, which would have been impossible to complete fully in one day.
Steel Road plates where used to cover the excavated area within the carriageway, allowing the works to be safely and securely sealed off and traffic to resume on the carriageway, with no interruptions during rush hour or high traffic periods.
Installation of the Road Plates was fast and efficient, same was applicable for Road Plate removal, allowing works to commence quickly and easily within the allocated 5hr time-frame.
Conclusion of Transport Research Laboratory Trial
The use of Steel or Anti-Skid Road Plates in this trail have shown huge benefits to highways contractors and utility contractors.
This is especially noticeable in projects that have unavoidable excavated areas. The use of Steel or Anti-Skid Road Plate can safely and securely cover and seal off an excavated or trenched area at the end of a working day.
Allowing uninterrupted access to carriageway and high traffic areas. Steel / Anti-Skid Road Plates also reduce congestion and avoid costly lane rental charges to the contractor.
Steel / Anti-Skid Road Plates – User Guide
The use of Road Plates must follow health and safety guidelines and safe use of practice principles, these include;
Storage and Handling of Anti-Skid and Steel Road Plates
- Steel or Anti-Skid Road Plates are designed to be stored in a stacking manor, on a suitable, firm, level surface.
- Road Plates should be stacked on 4’ x 3’ battens
- Road Plates, steel or anti-skid treated should not be handled by one person. Appropriate lifting equipment must be implemented for loading, unloading and installation.
Transportation
- Road Plates must be stacked correctly, and chained securely to the transport vehicle.
Installation of Steel Road Plates / Anti-Skid Road Plates
- Crane lifting equipment is required when installing Steel or Anti-Skid Road Plates, necessary to accurately position the road plates over excavated or trenched areas.
- Road Plates must be securely anchored to the road surfaced at all times
- Tapered edge ramps / toe ramps must be installed where applicable
- Kerb and handrails (where applicable) must also be installed
- Regular checks must be undertaken when road plates are in use to ensure there is no overloading, or movement either laterally or longitudinally.
Removal of Steel & Anti-skid Road Plates
- Steel and Anti-Skid Road Plates must be removed using crane lifting equipment. Road Plates must then be transported, inspected and stored correctly (detailed above).
